Dear Jim,

Thank you for taking the time to write. I, too, am 60 years old and remember listening to the Big Band music while growing up. I became re-aquainted with it about 7 years ago, that is when I discovered Martha Tilton, and have been in love with her music ever since.

To me Martha had the most beautiful voice ever. I listen to her daily and never tier of her music. She did a number of versions of "And The Angels Sing", each one getting better as the years went on.

I hope that you will take tha time to check out all of the sections in "marthatilton.com", make sure to check out the "YouTube section, as it has some very rare film clips of her from the 40's.

Thank you again for writing.

For Martha,

Hi:
I first heard "And the Angels Sing" a couple of years ago on "The Music of Your Life" radio station here in Battle Creek, Michigan. I just love that recording and listened to hear who was singing. My what a beautiful voice. Today I was surfing the inter-net and found this really great site that has been created for this beautiful lady.
I never knew she was so popular as I grew up somewhat later. I am 60 and I have been falling in love with the swing era and the tremendious music of that time in just the last few years.
I have found a few LPs with the Big Bands and some the clasics of the time.
Thanks to all the people that made that Music of that time.

Good Day,
I am not sure how to go about this. I have been going through my fathers things from WW II. He served in the Navy and for a while was on a small island in the Pacific called Emirau. I have found three photograps of Martha Tilton. One by herself, one with Jack Benny and one with Carole Landis and a single name on the photo of "Andrea" (not sure who she is). I would be very willing to email a copy of these to you if you feel this is appropriate for your page.
Thanks,

Hello,
This is a nice site and I found it while looking up an old cousin of my Father's he always called 'liltin Marie Tilton'. It seems her mother was a Dicus until she married the Tilton family, and they had a singing daughter he heard of when he was a kid. Could this be the same lady? Just the name got confused when being told family member by family member from Missouri to Hollywood and back again? It is sad I did not see this site a couple of years ago, I travel often through LA and Hollywood and enjoy the sights and people there, and to be able to pop in with my Dad to visit her would have been fun if they are indeed related.
And to think of how often I've driven by that house on Highland.
It was entertaining and interesting to see her videos on YouTube. I did not know the girls wore such short kilts in the 1940's. I guess wars always make the skirts shorter.
Keep up the good work, John Dicus, www.rivenrock.com

Your memory of Martha singing in "Mickey and the Beanstalk", struck up some fasination with on of the other fans that I E-Mail on a regular basis. He did some further investigation and found that, yes Martha did perform as the "Singing Harp", on a record album put out by Capitol Records in 1947. This seems to be a very rare set, so I guess I will have to keep my eyes open for this one.

It's things like this that help to keep this site interesting. It surely sparks investigation to find out more about the subject.

I had hoped to visit her this June past, but her health would not allow it.
In 1958 I was transferred from the East Coast to the West Coast by the Navy.
Driving cross country in those days was a long trek, so I made several stops
along the way. My last before going to my station in Northern Calif. was
in a small town outside L.A. I picked up a local paper and saw the Curt
Massey Martha Tilton show was on a station I could pickup at the motel.
I had listened to the 2 for many years on radio, but had never seen their
TV show which was very similar to the Alka Seltzer radio program. I caught
the program and only remember Martha singing one solo--"Autumn Leaves." This
was "live" TV and the set had a tree and someone on the set made the leaves
fall as Martha sang. The leaves must have been made of aluminum and you
could hear each one hit the floor. Martha somehow maintained a straight face
but you could tell she was amused by the whole situation. This turned out
to be my only viewing of her on TV as the program was a local L.A. production
and not carried in Northern Calif.
About 15 years ago Martha appeared in Charlotte, NC with the Horace Heidt,
Jr. touring Big Band. Also on the bill was John Gary and, I think, the
tap dancer from the Lawrence Welk Show, Arthur Duncan. Martha looked
great in a rose colored evening gown with puffed sleeves. She also
sounded like her old self, but in a slightly lower register. She sang
a set of songs from her Goodman days and, of course, concluded with
"And the Angels Sing". The audience went "wild"--it was in a auditorium
that only seats about 600. I had hoped that she would come out and sign
autographs, but only Heidt did. It was a memorable peformance for me!

I'm glad that you came across my site. This is a very interesting memory of Martha, thatnk you for sharing it. I know that if she could, Martha would be threre again this year.

If you would have some photos of her and could make copies of them, I'd like to include them in my Photo Album section, so that others could enjoy them as well.

I see that you fellows were Merchant Marines, it is such a shame that you guys, especially during WWII, went through pure hell and didn't get much out of the Government in return. This past Saturday, my wife and I toured the "John W. Brown", a restored Liberty Ship in Baltimore.

If you would like to E-Mail me directly you may at - thomocc@yahoo.com -

Please say Hi to your fellow shipmates and tell them about my Martha site.

On October 12-15, 2006 the 1946 graduates of the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY will be gathering for their 60th reunion. Martha Tilton was their girl and actually came out to the Academy in 1945 with her show for the first Academy Ball.

She was helpful with our 55th Reunion and wears a Class of 1946 Blue and Gray cap when possible. We hope.

This year nearly 100 of us will gather in the same room in which she sang, receieve a CD of many of the songs we remember and also remember a classmate Lee Jordan, who went on to NBC after WW2 and became a netwrok host for Broadway programming. Lee had a daily program from the Academy from 11:30 to noon everyday that was broadcast on NBC- We heard Martha sing everyday.

We all love her and wish she could be with us again.

I'm so glad that you enjoy this site, keep checking back, as we up date it regularly, especially the photo section. I'm also working on a section that will be devoted to her sister Liz.

I usually try and call her once a month, and usually E-Mail her son two or three time per week.

As for "And The Angels Sing", she made at least four versions of this song, I have all four of them, my favorite is the Capital version. The original version had another verse after Ziggy's trumpet solo, but was cut because it was too long for a 78 RPM record.

Thanks again, and keep in touch.

A little off subject, but I just (re)heard "Angels" on Iceberg Radio, and - since I had last seen Martha ages ago on an American Masters PBS special - idly wondered whether the lady was still with us.
Dear Fans,

On 25 June 06, my wife and I had lunch with Jon Vannersen, Martha's son. I had hoped to visit with Martha as well, but her frail health prohibited this. We had a great time discussing his mother's career, and I picked up a few more details I did not know; I will be adding these to the Bio section soon.

Martha is still sharp as a tack mentally, it is just that she tires easily. I did drive past her home - she lives in a beautiful area of Los Angeles surrounded by trees and landscaping.

I would like to invite you, her fans, to drop her a line. If you mail them to me at:

Lititz, Pa. 17543-0220

I will mail them directly to her as they come in. I know she would love to hear from all of you. It might also be interesting to tell her your age, I've found she is developing a younger audience than I had thought; also how you've come to enjoy her music.

Yours for Martha,
