I have just heard this Amanda Carr's tune on youtube twice "If You Could See Me Now"

and find a very good singer.

Many thanks for your indication, also the players I find to be excellent.
When you'll see Her, lot of compliments from Genoa for this very expressive voice, that I find, above all, sincere. Sense of form, impressive vocal skills without loosing the simplicity of expression.... the culminat point at 2'42 i find to be exemplar in this sense.

Now I have heard five times...

Dear Medtner,

Thank you for visiting my site for Martha, she was a very delightful lady and had a real heart of gold. I, too, liked Loch Lomond and The Angels Sing. I also like a version of Paper Moon, that she did on Armed Forced Radio, but never recorded. E-mail me directly to my normal email address and I'll attach it back to you.

It's great to know that younger folks like har music as well. I'm 62 and have been in love with her voice for about 10 years, when I got into Swing Music.

Another Gal singer you might want to check out is Amanda Carr, she also has the kind of voice that I never tier of. She is an up and coming Big Band / Jazz singer and also a personel friend of my wife and I.

Tom Oehme has written about some his preferences in this site. I feel you are better off with out a short list. If you really want to experience her magical voice you may want to listen to her best recordings AND the others.

Experiencing a wide variety of her music will help you to refine your new taste for quality music. After time the discovery of her new to you recordings will give you a better appreciation for the subdued brilliance in her vocals.

In regard to reading and retaining all the wonderful information here you may want to do as Barbara Stanwyck in Drum Boogie and “Let it Creep Up On Me”.

A good place to hear some of her "best" is on the "AUDIO" page. A list of the CD's on the market at one time or another is on the "ON CD" page. You can't go wrong, if you acquire a CD and don't appreciate it today; tomorrow is always a new day.

I don’t remember hearing of “Martha Tilton” until two years ago ....today I believe she was one of the greatest recorded female vocalists ever. The song/video that hooked me was “A Little Jive Is Good For You (1941)”.

I hope you will continue to enjoy this site and the angelic music left for us by the late "Sweetheart of Swing".

OK, so I'm hooked. Before last night I'd never heard of MT, but may have seen or heard her in film and recording and just not known it was her. Anyway, I grabbed everything in the audio area and since I've been driving all day, listening all day! Most of the recordings have a low bit rate and quality is variable. I'm not knocking it by any means. You have no idea how happy I am to be able to totally immerse myself in two new voices. Man have I ever been missing something!

But...given the myriad of relabelling, repackaging, and so on that happens with older artists, does anyone have a short-list on must have CDs?

Thanks all.

These words from newspaper article "she sang it

I'm from Italy (so I don't know english very well) and have been a fan of Hers since I was, I think, five or six or seven, don't remember well. My father used to play when accompained me to school the famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, I loved all the music and heard hundred of times, but I noticed the two songs Miss Tilton sung in particular. Being a child, I imagined her to be black-haired and similar to Rita Hayworth in sembiance. I found Loch Lomond to be almost ironical, while "Bei mir bist du Schoen" I found very serious in style.
Now I'm above all a classical music lover and a non-professional pianist (here is my nick origins), but Martha Tilton stills remains if not my preferred singer, surely one which name is holy for me. I have scanned a photo from a little cd cover of Benny Goodman (I think it was a french bmg release), and framed it.
Just taken the double cd Jasmine release, hope to receive in a few time.

Great idea to make a site about this dear singer, for years I have tried to gather more informations about Her, now I can hear lot of songs here, but only once a time, don't want to listen too much tunes all together.
You know, here in Italy is not so simple to find news bout Her...

Pinball,

Oooh-oh-boom:

I believe you have answered Pinball's observation and inquiry very well. In fact superbly done. I too enjoy listening to Martha the "oo's Magnificent" on 78's. I too have no 78's, or 45's, or any vinyl at all for Martha. That's odd considering my collection of 33's and 45's from 50's to 70's.

I myself have resigned to recording Martha's 78's from the Internet (forums, YouTube, and such) and then burning them to CD's and/or DVD's for listening. I also burn to CD her never pressed songs from the films and radio shows. There are a few MP3's I have from Amazon and I-Tunes that are nice also.

Occasionally when searching for "new to me" Tilton's on a 78, I may run across another wonderful release (Although not Tilton) that I enjoy burning to CD and/or DVD. When this happens its an especially enjoyable bonus.

For vinyl to MP3's I've found (for me) that I-Tunes is especially limited when it comes to the Tiltons; but getting better. Amazon has a better selection for Tilton and the old big band.

There are a few wonderful web-sites that cater extensively only to reselling old records if you are ready to spend search time looking for what you want. I've personally had very pleasant experiences with them. Then if you scan Ebay daily you may find a jewel v-disc or 78, but who knows when. Did you read what happened to Tom O's 33 he purchased off E-Bay, I believe it was destroyed by the time it was delivered to him.

Pinball, the first, when you find those 78's on CD's please count me in on some copies. I could send you some now -- BUT I don't have the 78's separated from the others.

Pinball do you expect to respond to Pinball's reply?

OBERSVATION: I believe there may be people who join/log-on to the this site simply to make one comment then never answer a message or visit the site again.

The Martha Tilton Forum seems less a thriving metropolis for abundant fan interaction and more a ghost town where soliloquies alone break the silence. So, I thought I would reply to my own message.

pinball, I agree wholeheartedly with your observation about Martha's voice. I can recall to mind a few exquisite examples of her way with "oo"s: I USED TO BE COLOR BLIND, THE ANGELS CRIED, and YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO YOUNG.

Those are sweet examples, indeed, pinball.

Thanks. As far as Martha's V-Disc recordings go, I will refer you to a previous Forum post with the subject line of "V-Discs."

Oh, I've looked at that already, pinball. It is but a single entry of inquiry--unanswered--and provides no song-specific details.

Well, did you check Tom Oehme's discography?

Yes, but the V-disc selections are not grouped together; I would prefer a handy and complete list.

Aren't you demanding!

I trust not, pinball. As an admirer of Martha's, I simply want as much information about her musical output as possible: chronological, complete, and ready to hand.

I suppose that's reasonable. Let me address your 78rpm records request. Ah, it looks like you want another list...

That's true, pinball.

Can't help you there, pal. In fact, I don't own a single Tilton 78. Maybe you can suggest some sources from whom I can obtain some?

Don't have a clue, brother.

Why not ask the helpful general public by means of this Forum? After all, it's accessible worldwide!

I don't think anybody else is out there.

How cynical! Well, anyway, it's been nice chatting with YOU just the same, pinball.

Sentiment's mutual, pinball. Keep listening to Martha T.

Observation: of all the big band "canaries," Martha was the best "long-vowel" singer. Just listen to her spun-honey way with "ay"s and "ee"s and "ii"s and "oh"s and, especially, "oo"s. Magnificent.

Inquiries:
1) anybody have a complete list and personal collection of Martha's V-Disc recordings? Please list the songs here. Are you willing to share them with a fellow fan? I'd love to listen to burned copies on CD.
2) anybody have a complete list of Martha's songs on 78rpm records? Please list them here. I am especially interested in those titles which have not yet been--and may never be--released to CD.

I hope that you take the time to listen to the many songs that are in my "Audio

That song, if recorded, whould have been a hit.

Thank you from marthatilton.com

I'm a university professor grading comprehensive exams and "The Benny Goodman Story" came up on my iTunes this morning. There are two Martha Tilton vocals on the CD (MCAD-4055 -- (c)1972): "And the Angels Sing" and "You Turned the Tables on Me." I'm with Jon: "You Turned the Tables on Me" is a favorite song of mine. There are only four other songs in my iTunes library with a higher all-time play count!

I discovered big band music in high school when a small school band played "A String of Pearls" and "In the Mood" at an induction ceremony. A couple years later I would discover big band music as the first thing I had in common with my future father-in-law.

Thirty-plus years later, at age 50, I still enjoy the music -- and the occasional vocals -- from that golden era of American music. I'm glad I have "You Turned the Tables on Me" in digital form: even if the turntable weren't in the attic, I'd wear out that track if it were on vinyl!

Nice site, Tom. After listening to "You Turned the Tables on Me" this morning, I googled Martha Tilton out of curiosity and found your tribute to the person behind the two songs I know.

There's a 10 CD set called Benny Goodman Portrait available on Amazon for $29.98.
It's made in Germany on the Past Perfect label.
ALL of Martha's commercial recordings are on it! What a deal.
Sound it superb also due to remastering.
Pop Corn Man is among Martha's readings along with the rare Is That The Way to Treat a Sweetheart, another one of my favorite Martha renditions:) 1938 was a banner year for our Martha!

'I Used to be Color Blind' from the Camel Caravan and 'So Many Memories' from the 1937 Madhattan Room broadcasts are two of my favorites.

Both of these recordings are from her new CD on Jasmine, entitled "Liltin".

It's wonderful that 3 new CDs have been issued recently in her honor!

I was able to pick up the Capitol set on Amazon for $79 and there is one up for sale for about $49! What a great set.

"Popcorn Man" is a very rare one, I do have all of these in my collection in one form or another. "Popcorn Man" in on a 33 1/3 Goodman Album, I've never found it on a 78.

I had liked the songs of the 1940s as far as I can remember (I guess from my grandmother humming them as she rocked me to sleep), but was introduced to Martha Tilton and her music in high school, when one of my friends told me that he was her great-nephew (Liz's grandson). I remember going to the record store that day and getting the just-released Capitol CD, and have become a huge fan of her music ever since.

My three favorite Martha songs are

"Every So Often": I've always loved Harry Warren's compositions; there seemed to be a period of time when I got introduced to a song, immediately took a yen to it, and then glanced at the cover and noticed Warren as one of the songwriters. Martha's voice is so pure in this recording, and the accompaniment complements her so well. I've loved this song ever since day one.

"Sincerely Yours": I bought a record player and began to listen to Martha's 78s. This was one she did for the Bluebird label, I believe, and has a nice slow tempo. Unfortunately, my record player was broken, so until I get an new one (I'm going a step further and want a console!), I don't get to listen to this song!

"My Dream Is Yours": In addition to it being a Harry Warren song, I also love this one because I am a great fan of Doris Day's early songs as well (those got me into 40s music in the first place), and it's nice to see a fresh view from an equally great perspective.

Jon,

You are a bit like myself, I too, discovered Martha about 5 years ago, and have loved her vioce and music ever since. I also collect music of the late 30's and 40's. Martha is one of the few singers that I can honestly listen to for hours and never tier of her voice.

Thanks for writing and adding your thoughts.

I am 63 yrs old, retired, and love Martha's recordings, especially the song listed here. I only discovered Martha about four years ago when I was building my MP3 collection; I focus on the music from the female recording artists of the 20's, 30's, and 40's - and greatly admire those who gave of their time to entertain the troops during WWII.

Thanks for this terrific site!
